Wema Bukembe Development Organization
On 26th June, after our session on Climate Change and Environment at Lotus Of Highway School, we gave the students a very unique assignment; a tree planting photo contest. Given that the school was breaking for mid-term the next day, we tasked all the students to plant trees alongside their families over the break, and document the experience through photographs, which they would later share with the school. Furthermore, we encouraged them to document the growth and development of their trees with follow-up photos after a few months. The response has been marvelous. The children went out of the way to plant trees, while explaining to their families the importance of trees in combating climate change. We gifted the best three photos though we really wish we could award all the children because what they did is beautiful, and every tree planted is worth the effort. This incredible project has enabled us to plant so many trees in different parts of the county, using so many hands. This program is aimed at increasing the number of foot soldiers fighting for climate change. We firmly believe that this initiative serves as an exemplary model that should be replicated in schools nationwide. By ensuring the commitment of all children to plant a tree, we will be able to achieve President H.E William Ruto’s target of 15 billion trees by 2032 in half the anticipated time.1. The best photo was Hope Zawadi, who sat down her whole family including her grandmother to and explained about the importance of trees, as they had learnt in the session.2. The second photo was Purery Juma, who had planted many seedlings at home and who is also the President of the Environment Club3. The third award went to Dennis Chamwama who took very lovely photos with his family. Please enjoy the photos. We will document the progress in a few months.
