Another session at Lotus of Highway School by presenter Dr.Niranjan Khatri, founder and principal consultant of iSambhav in India. He talked about Bank of Nutrition, an initiative of iSambhav, that aims to empower below the poverty line households with access to plants that they can grow easily and inexpensively in their backyards or around their homes. The plants proposed are fruits and vegetable plants like guavas, lemons, papayas, drumsticks (Moringa), bananas, amla – easy to grow but also providers of daily nutrition and health. These plants are extremely rich in vitamins A, B and C.
They are also a source of antioxidants, fiber and essential minerals. He encouraged the students to plant these fruit trees in their homes. He challenged the students to each plant a tree at home with their family and send photos to the school. They will also be required to take photos of the same tree after a few months.
He also talked about how we all want to change our planet, but the change really starts with us. If we all make changes in our individual lives, then we will change the planet. Some of his recommendations are; Save energy by using renewable energy solutions; he showed us a winding torch light and solar Ballon light and encouraged the students to embrace such renewable energy solutions in their daily lives.
-Do not fill your glasses of water but instead only take what they need to consume at the moment. This is to avoid throwing away water.
-He also encouraged the teachers not to wear coat/tie which would need air conditioning, but rather to enjoy the natural climate. All these actions lessen the energy consumed in our daily lives.
-He told the children not to throw away mango seeds after eating, but instead plant in their villages and be self-reliant by growing as many edible fruit trees.
We ended the session by watching a video on Rainwater Harvesting where everyone was collecting rain water in whatever thing could hold; in their umbrellas, in buckets, in gumboots, in a helmet, in cups. The moral of the video is that rainwater belongs to all of us; but how do we keep and share?
